TBH's default settings will get you started, but the difference between default and optimized settings is hours of wasted idle time. Here's exactly how to configure the game so your heroes keep grinding while you sleep, work, or play other games.
3 Settings You Must Change Immediately
Change these three settings immediately after installing TBH:
| # | Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Auto-Retry on Fail | ON | Without this, a single wipe stops all progress until you manually restart. Hours of idle farming lost. |
| 2 | Auto-Open Chests | ON | Unlocked via Rune Tree convenience node. Without it, chests pile up unopened — you get zero items from them until you click. |
| 3 | Continue in Background | ON | Ensures the game keeps running when minimized or behind other windows. TBH is designed for this — use it. |
Auto-Retry Explained
This single setting determines whether TBH is an idle game or a game you have to babysit.
How It Works
When your party wipes (all heroes die), Auto-Retry waits a few seconds and restarts the stage automatically. Without it, the game stops and waits for you to click "Retry." If you're sleeping or at work, that's 8+ hours of zero progress.
How to Use It Effectively
- Enable it and forget it. There's no downside. If you're stronger now, your heroes won't wipe. If they do wipe, they'll try again automatically.
- Pair with Stage Select awareness. If your heroes wipe on every single attempt, you're on a stage too hard for your current gear. Drop down one difficulty tier — surviving with lower drop rates beats dying with higher ones.
- Check your wipe count. TBH tracks how many times your party has wiped. If you see the number climbing rapidly, your party needs upgrades or a stage change.
How Offline Mode Works
TBH's offline progression is one of the most misunderstood mechanics in the game. Here's exactly what happens when you close the game:
What Offline Mode Gives You
- Gold and experience — at a reduced rate (~50-70% of active play)
- Capped at 8 hours maximum — after that, you earn nothing
What Offline Mode Does NOT Give You
- Zero chest drops. This is the big one. If you want equipment, the game needs to be running — even if it's minimized.
- No quest progress. Story and event quests only advance during active play.
- No Cube crafting progress. Timed crafting operations pause when the game is closed.
Bottom line: Close the game when you're done for the day and want to collect some passive gold/XP. Keep the game running (minimized is fine) when you want to farm gear. Chest drops = active play only.
Quick Decision: Online AFK vs. Offline Mode
| Scenario | Recommended Mode | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Need gear/materials/Soulstones | Online AFK | Chests are the only source of gear |
| Want to earn money through Steam Market | Online AFK | Must have items to sell |
| Stepping away for a bit (≤4 hours) | Online AFK | Maximizes all resource gain |
| Closing down for the night | Either | Online AFK for gear; Offline for passive gold/XP only |
| Don't want the game open at all | Offline | Passive gold and XP only — zero chests |
Core rule to remember: offline mode drops ZERO chests. If your goal involves getting any items at all, the game must stay online. Minimized counts as online.
Best Display Settings for Idle Farming
Window Size
TBH's window is designed to sit above your Windows taskbar. The default compact size works well for most monitors. You can:
- Resize freely: Drag the window edges to any size. Larger = easier to read. Smaller = more discreet.
- Always on Top: Enable this if you want TBH always visible above other windows. Good for monitoring progress at a glance. Disable if you find it distracting.
- Lock to Taskbar: When enabled, the window snaps to sit just above the Windows taskbar. This is TBH's signature feature — recommended for the full "taskbar hero" experience.
Graphics Quality
TBH uses pixel art — graphics settings have minimal visual impact and negligible performance differences. Set to Low if you're on a laptop or concerned about battery. Set to High if you want the crispest pixels (the difference is subtle).
How to Reduce CPU & RAM Usage for TBH
CPU & Memory Usage
TBH is extremely lightweight. At idle with the game window visible, it typically uses:
- CPU: ~1-3% on modern processors
- RAM: ~150-300 MB
- GPU: Negligible (pixel art rendering)
Reducing Resource Usage Further
- Minimize the window. When TBH is minimized, rendering stops entirely. CPU usage drops to near zero while the game logic keeps running.
- Lower the frame rate cap. In Settings, you can cap TBH's FPS as low as 10. Combat animations become choppy but the underlying simulation runs at full speed. Good for laptop battery life.
- Disable combat animations. Some players report that disabling flash effects and damage numbers reduces CPU usage slightly. The impact is small but cumulative on older hardware.
System Requirements Reality Check
TBH's official minimum specs say "any dual-core CPU, 2 GB RAM." In practice, the game runs on essentially any Windows 10/11 machine. If your computer can run Windows, it can run TBH.
Which Notifications to Enable
TBH can notify you when certain events happen. The key is configuring notifications so they're helpful, not annoying:
- Legendary Drop: ON — you want to know when a gold item drops so you can check its stats immediately
- Party Wipe: ON — if your auto-retry team keeps wiping, you need to know so you can adjust
- Level Up: OFF — too frequent, not actionable
- Quest Complete: OFF — you'll check naturally
- Steam Market Sale: ON — instant gratification for your farming efforts
Best Rune Tree QoL Upgrades to Get First
Several Rune Tree nodes fundamentally change how you interact with the game. Prioritize these after hero slots:
| Priority | Node | Effect | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto-Open Chests | Automatically opens dropped chests | Without this, chests sit unopened forever. This is effectively a "receive loot" toggle. | |
| Bag Expansion | Increases inventory capacity | Your inventory fills fast during long AFK sessions. More space = less wasted drops. | |
| Offline Time Extension | Extends the 8-hour offline cap | Each node adds ~2 hours. Worth investing if you regularly go 10+ hours without playing. | |
| Experience Boost | Passive XP gain increase | Levels = skill points = power. One of the best long-term investments in the tree. |
