How Engraving Works

Engraving is the Cube's guaranteed stat bonus mechanic. Unlike decoration and inscription (which give random results), engraving gives you a fixed, predictable stat bonus every time. You know exactly what you're getting before you commit.

Each engraving consumes one engraving material and applies its stated bonus to the item. There is no variance — if the material says "+10% ATK", you get exactly +10% ATK. This makes engraving the most reliable way to strengthen your gear.

Why engraving matters: In a game full of RNG mechanics, engraving is the one system where you have complete control. You choose the stat, you get the stat, no gambling involved. This reliability comes at a premium — engraving materials are among the rarest in the game.

Engraving vs Inscription

New players often confuse these two. Here's the clear breakdown:

PermanencePermanent — cannot be transferredCan be removed via Extraction
Simple rule: Engravings are for your very best gear. Inscriptions are for everything else. If you would be devastated to lose this bonus, it should be an engraving.

Permanence

Engravings are permanent. Once you engrave a stat onto an item, that engraving is bound to that specific item forever. You cannot:

  • Move an engraving from one item to another
  • Recover the engraving material (even with Extraction — Extraction only removes the effect, not the material)
  • Undo an engraving and get a refund

This is why the golden rule of engraving is: only engrave Immortal+ gear you'll keep forever. Every engraving on an item you later replace is a permanent loss of a rare resource.

Extraction does NOT return engraving materials. If you use Extraction to remove an engraving effect, the slot is freed but the engraving material is gone. You lose both the material and pay 1,000g for the privilege.

Engraving Strategy

Gear Worth Engraving

  • Immortal+ gear with perfect base rolls. If an item has exactly the subclass and stat distribution you want for your main hero, it's an engraving candidate.
  • Cosmic-rarity gear (final tier). Cosmic items cannot be synthesized further — they are the ultimate destination. Engravings on Cosmic gear are the safest investment in the game.
  • Accessories with irreplaceable combinations. A ring with the perfect mix of ATK/CRIT/CDMG for your DPS hero is worth engraving because finding a better one could take weeks.

Gear NOT Worth Engraving

  • Anything below Immortal. You will replace it. Engravings on Legendary gear are almost always a mistake.
  • Items with placeholder stats. If you're using an item temporarily until you craft a better one, don't engrave it.
  • Gear you might sell on Steam Market. Engravings, like decorations, are wiped when listed on the market.
Pro tip — Engraving slot priority: Each item has a limited number of engraving slots. Prioritize slots in this order: (1) Weapon — ATK% or Crit DMG, (2) Accessories — Crit Rate or ATK%, (3) Armor — DEF% or HP%. Offensive stats on weapons and accessories provide the most noticeable power increase.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Engraving Legendary gear. Legendary is the minimum rarity for Steam Market trading, which means it's also the entry point for replaceable gear. By the time you hit Cube Lv.15 (required for engraving), you should already be working toward Immortal+ items. Engraving a Legendary item is almost never optimal.
Mistake #2: Using a rare engraving material on a mediocre item. The best engraving materials (+15% ATK, +10% Crit DMG) are extremely scarce. Save them for your absolute best gear. Don't waste a premium engraving on an item with mediocre base stats just because it's your current best.
Mistake #3: Engraving before checking market value. Some items with rare engraving combinations sell for a premium on the Steam Market — but only if you haven't engraved them. Check whether the un-engraved item is worth selling before you commit a permanent engraving to it.
